The Story of SantoEstévão

The meaning of "Terra dos Calhandros"

Literally translated, it means: "Land of (with) the stones (pebbles)," but the deeper meaning is much more interesting. Santo Estevão (Saint Stephen) is a saint within the Catholic faith community and is regarded as one of the first martyrs who professed faith in Jesus Christ. The manner of his confession of faith ultimately led to a martyr's death by STONING.

In Portugal, it is common to give people from various villages, and even among themselves, nicknames. As a result, all inhabitants of Santo Estevão are referred to as "subjects" of Saint Stephen and are called "the stoned ones" or "Calhandros." In Portuguese, stones or pebbles are referred to as: Calhandros. This has a double meaning regarding both the people and the region. There are also quite a few characteristic small and large stones and pebbles to be found here, including on our estate. Therefore, it is essentially: "The land of the people who live in Santo Estevão." The land with the stones, and of the "STONED ONES." It should be honestly said that only the indigenous inhabitants may bear the title: Calhandros, of course.
